D7 STEERING CLUTCHES

The steering clutches for the early D7's (D7 7M,3T, 4T, 17A MODELS) all used the same bimetallic friction discs(10 used per clutch) and steel separator plates (10 used per clutch). If the plates are damaged, by scoring, warping, or just plain old wear they should be replaced but you can often reuse the steel plates. Sharp teeth on the friction discs or plates will also disqualify them for re-use. All parts listed below are new aftermarket parts.

5H2307_HD_LINING__KIT.jpg (239774 bytes)

HEAVY DUTY WOVEN LINING    57.00   ORDER P/N  5H2307HD

THIS TYPE OF LINING IS PRIMARILY FOR DRY TYPE BRAKES. THE BRAKE LINING KIT, INCLUDES RIVETS, LINING, 57.00/SET
HEAVY DUTY WOVEN LINING WOVEN WITH BRASS STRANDS, DESIGNED FOR REPEATED USE IN SEVERE CONDITIONS, ABLE TO WITHSTAND HIGH TEMPERATURE USE (400 DEGREE)WITH MINIMAL LOSS OF COEFFICIENT OF FRICTION.  THE MATERIAL IS ALSO GOOD IN SOME OIL TYPE APPLICATIONS.   (IT SHOULD BE GROOVED FOR BETTER PERFORMANCE IN OIL APPLICATIONS)

The lining is easier to work with and you can even change position of rivet holes if necessary to compensate for bad rivet holes in the band.  This style of lining elminates the possibility of breaking, cracking, or chipping like the molded style linings which are brittle and must fit the perfect curvature of the band.   It is often tough to fit the molded linings to 70-80 year old brake bands without damaging/breaking the old molded style of lining.

CAT_D7_BRAKE_BAND.JPG (182158 bytes)  IN STOCK!! NEW BAKE BANDS COMPLETE WITH NEW LINING, NEW 3 PC BRAKE BAND  $366.00 OUTRIGHT
AND NO CORE CHARGES!!
These bands will fit the D7 dry type steering clutches for the models D7 7M, D7 3T, 4T, 6T, and D7 17A.
The part numbers for these bands went through quite an evolution as did the bands.   The early bands, for the model 7M's and early 3T's did not have any reinforcing plates at the joints.  When the part numbers went from the "B" part numbers to the "F" part numbers, reinforcing plates were added to the "6F" and on all bands thereafter.  Upper Band P/N's 6B7484->6F6285->1M0547  Center Band P/N's 6B7352->6F2686-   Lower Band P/N's 6B7241->6F2687->4M8766

WHEN REMOVING YOUR STEERING CLUTCH..........IT IS IMPORTANT TO RIG YOUR LIFTING SLING ON THE BRAKE BAND PROPERLY TO PREVENT DAMAGE TO YOUR BRAKE BAND (CLICK HERE FOR INFO)   This excerpt from a 1955 Service Magazine is a reference for the D8 steering clutch but the principle is the same.  Do not damage your brake band!

If you have an old tractor where their production goes back into the 1930's and 1940's you might be interested in perusing, and even using, the following manual   ACCESSORY AND SUPPLY CATALOG

The "T" bar puller can be used with the center  push-bolt or a
hydraulic cylinder.
CAT_D4_STEERING_CLUTCH_DISASSEMBLY4.JPG (186527 bytes)
We have a lot of misc pins
laying around but this chunk
of steel fit perfectly.
CAT_D4_STEERING_CLUTCH_DISASSEMBLY5.JPG (181703 bytes)
On a D2 or a D4 the clutches
are pressed off end of bevel
gear cross shaft.  On
D5 D6 D7's you press off a tapered splined stub shaft and flange.
CAT_D4_STEERING_CLUTCH_DISASSEMBLY6.JPG (185380 bytes)
Removal of bearing cage and
bearing makes disassembly
easier.
Don't forget to remove set
screws in retainer nut!!
CAT_D4_STEERING_CLUTCH_DISASSEMBLY7.JPG (188198 bytes)
When you press down on the compression tool you want something to keep the studs in place so get a spacer to keep studs from dropping when you turn the clutch over.
CAT_D4_STEERING_CLUTCH_DISASSEMBLY8.JPG (190987 bytes)
You can use a press like we usually do but unless you do a lot of these clutches a simple piece of all-thread is all that you need.  Anchor it through your work bench or table.
CAT_D4_STEERING_CLUTCH_DISASSEMBLY9.JPG (192568 bytes)
Place compression tool and add a washer to disperse the pressure over the face of the tool.  Otherwise you can end up with a concave tool!
CAT_D4_STEERING_CLUTCH_DISASSEMBLY10.JPG (187226 bytes)
With your spacer underneath to keep your studs in place (shown above)
and compression tool on top
you are ready to compress the springs.
CAT_D4_STEERING_CLUTCH_DISASSEMBLY11.JPG (177407 bytes)
As the springs compress the end of the studs will gain clearance until the locks
are free from the retainers.
CAT_D4_STEERING_CLUTCH_DISASSEMBLY12.JPG (185189 bytes)
Remove all of the locks and be careful not to lose any!
When you put these back in you apply grease to the locks
keep them in place.
CAT_D4_STEERING_CLUTCH_DISASSEMBLY13.JPG (184208 bytes)
Release all pressure and remove compression tool.  You can now remove retainers and springs.
CAT_D4_STEERING_CLUTCH_DISASSEMBLY14.JPG (182223 bytes)
Now is time to check measurements on springs.
if any are shorter than the others by 1/8" it should be replaced. It is probably a good practice just to replace them due to low cost and the labor involved if you have to go back in there again!
CAT_D4_STEERING_CLUTCH_DISASSEMBLY15.JPG (186083 bytes) CAT_D4_STEERING_CLUTCH_DISASSEMBLY16.JPG (188792 bytes)
Now you can remove all the parts for inspection of discs and components.

Minor rippling on the inner drum is fine.

Make sure stud holes on pressure plate are not wallowed out or worn too far below the surface.
